August TBR

August is upon us and this month instead of my normal TBR game I am doing a few readathons and trying to finish my stack of ARCs. One of the two readathons I am participating is the month long Trope-ical Readathon. This is a readathon hosted by @jenjenreviews and @bookrob13 on Twitter!

The Trope-ical readathon is a team base readathon, focusing on genres and their common tropes. I, obviously, picked to be on team Sci-Fi/Fantasy . There are 13 general challenges based on well known tropes (with an alternate prompt too) and 2 team prompts as well as a group read. All of which add up to points for your team! You can find all the details about how this readathon works HERE.

I am also participating in Tome Topple and will do a TBR update for that closer to the time.

Absent/Dead Parent(s) Trope:

Read a book that has more than one “parent” (i.e. multiple authors).

The Ghost Tree
Christina Henry

eARC

I am lucky to have an eARC of this. I love Christina Henry’s writing, especially her origin story for Captain Hook in Lost Boy. This is not a retelling but sounds just as interesting as her other works. I am sure it will be just as dark and creepy. I have choose this for the Dead Parent Trope as the blurb mentions the mysterious death of the MC’s father.

Strange Names Trope:

Read a book that starts with the same letter as your name.

Assassin’s Quest
Robin Hobb

Farseer Trillogy #3

I was hoping to get to this book in July but it was a strange reading month. So It is now in this TBR. I think this series count’s as Strange names seeing as the Royalty are named for virtues their parents hope they have such as Chivalry, Verity and Regal. If that is not interesting character naming I don’t know what is

Outbreak/Pandemic Trope:

Read a book that is part of a series.

Dead Man in a Ditch
Luke Arnold

The Fetch Phillips Archives #2

eARC

This book covers both of the prompts, kind of. It is definitely part of a series. I read and reviewed The Last Smile in Sunder City (read it HERE) and I am so excited to get to continue. But also this world has suffered a pandemic/event/outbreak that has caused its mythical creatures to loose there magic and we have yet to find out why!

Forbidden Romance Trope:

Read a book that is–or has been–banned.

Clockwork Angel
Cassandra Clare

The Infernal Devices #1

This one might be stretching the prompt a little as I have know idea if there is actually a forbidden romance in it but I need to fit this one in for Ellie (Read to Ramble) and I’s Shadowhunter Saturday series. I am really interested in starting this series. I think its going to be a bit of a change of pace, from the first three Mortal instruments books.

Dystopia Trope:

Read a book that is more than 500 pages long.

The Mime Order
Samantha Shannon

The Bone Season #2

I have been meaning to continue with this series for some time and with the 4th book on the cards for release and a short story recently released I think its about time I read the second book in the series. This again covers both prompts. It is set in a dystopian future UK and it is 501 pages long!

Blast from the Past Trope:

Read a book written before the year 2000.

The Thursday Murder Club
Richard Osman

eARC

Ok I am bending the prompt a little of this one. I have no idea if it has the “Blast from the Past” trope, but the MCs are all octogenarians so they must have some past tales to tell, while solving murders! This has been billed as very Agatha Christie esq and the blurb sounds like a retelling of one of my favourites.

Mixed Media Trope:

Listen to an audiobook.

The Well of Ascension
Brandon Sanderson

Mistoborn #2

Another book on my TBR last month I didn’t manage to read. I have decided to pick up the audiobook to help me get through this chonker! I really enjoyed the first in the series so hopefully I will enjoy this one.

Artificial Intelligence Trope:

Read read an ebook.

Rogue Protocol
Martha Wells

The Murderbot Diaries #3

MURDERBOT! we all know I love this character. This is another one that for me covers both prompts as I have it as an ebook and its MC is an AI.

Amnesia Trope:

Read a book that you forgot about on your TBR or bookshelf.

The Bone Shard Daughter
Andrea Stewart

eARC

All the reviews for this so far has been glowing and I am really excited to get to it. I am hoping I will enjoy it as much as others. from the descriptions I have heard this does have a bit of the amnesia trope.

Enemies to Lovers/Enemies to Friends Trope:

Read a book that you previously unfinished.

Chilling Effect
Valerie Valdes

Chilling Effect #1

eARC

I started reading this in February and while I was enjoying it I got super busy with work it got put down and I never finished it. I really need to pick it back up and this is the perfect prompt for it.

Chosen One Trope:

Read a book that someone else has chosen (or recommended) for you.

The Reckless life of Harriet Stoker
Lauren James

eARC

Another one I am not too sure if this will meet the prompt but judging from the blurb it does sound like it could have a little of the chosen one about it. Either way I am looking forward to reading it. It seems like it might be a little myterious.

The New Kid in Town Trope:

Read a genre you don’t usually read.

Small Spaces
Catherine Arden

Middle Grade Marvels

Despite having a few on this TBR Horror isn’t a Genre a usually reach for and I don’t think i have read a middle grade horror book before. This is a book club book for me and it seems the best way to fit it into my TBR.

Retelling Trope:

Read a book that has been adapted to a TV show and/or film.

Blood Heir
Amelie Wen Zhao

very belated eARC

I have actually hard an eARC for this for a very very long time and I shamefully never got to it. I heard that it is Anastasia retelling and that sounds super interesting.

Team Challenges

Magical Academy Trope:

The House in the Cerulean Sea
T.J Klune

This is set in a magical boarding school and the MC is a magical Social Services officer, it just sounds like such an unusual take on the magical academy trope. I have been wanting to read this for a while so I am glad it fits on the TBR

Time Travel Trope:

Lies, Damned Lies and History
Jodi Taylor

The chronicles of St Mary’s

Of course I was going to choose a St May’s book for the Time travel prompt. Any one who has read my blog before knows how much I adore this series.

Group Book

Cinderella is dead
Kalynn Bayron

This is the group book pick and I have heard amazing things. it doesnt come out till the 6th of August here in the UK so I will be

As well as the ones above that I have managed to fit into my Trope-ical Readathon TBR I also have a few other ARCs that need to be read before September.

Prime Deceptions
Valerie Valdes

Chilling effect #2

Yes I have book two in this series as and eARC and I have yet to finish book one. But I was loving book one so much I know I will want to dive right into the second!

May Day
Josie Jaffrey

Seekers #1

I was sent a gorgeous copy from the Author and I am also part of The Write Reads Ultimate Blog Tour for this book. I have seen some awesome reviews and we all know I love a sulky detective novel, add vampires to that and I am sold!

The First of Shadows
Deck Matthews

Riven Realm #1

Another The write Reads book tour and another surly detective meets Fantasy – my third for the month. I think i might be in that kind of mood. This is also a nice short one which my TBR is in desperate need of.

The Beast and the Bethany
Jack Meggitt-Philips

This is another HUGE blog tour from The Write reads! This book sounds so awesome, Middle Grade Marvels is lucky enough to be doing an author interview and it has already been picked up for a movie deal!!!! Its burbled as Lemony Snickett meets Dorian Grey which sounds fascinating.

Small Sapces is Middle Grade Marvels choice for August and I am so locking forward to discussing it with the group. Clockwork Angel is the first of two reads Ellie and I will be reading for Shadowhunter Saturday

Clockwork Prince
Cassandra Clare

The Infernal Devices #2

Ellie and I will be continuing on with The Infernal Devices, and luckily I dont need to finish this in August, we are on a three week schedule and this means I dont need to finish this till September but I will start it in August.

All your twisted secrets
Diana Urban

Talks and Thoughts Book club are having a book race, half of us are reading All your twisted secrets and half are reading silent companions. As the Trope Locked Room was picked as the clubs prompt for the clubs read this month.

Phew! wow this is going to be a busy month. Luckily I have some time off work so I can hopefully finish a good chunk of these reads! If I did manage it it would be 22 books for the month! I don’t know if it can be done but I am going to have fun trying.

I would love to chat all things bookish with you! You can comment down below or find me on Twitter or Goodreads!

Happy Reading!
