Title: 4:50 from Paddington
Author: Agatha Christie
Series: Ms Marple
4 stars
From Goodreads:
Two trains
Side by side for a brief moment
In that moment, a murder
Elspeth McGillicuddy is positive she witnessed a man strangling a woman to death.
But it was only the merest glimpse through a carriage window as the trains drew parallel.
She is the only witness, there are no suspects, and, most importantly, there is no corpse.
Who, apart from her friend Jane Marple, would take her seriously?
Never underestimate Miss Marple
My Thoughts
There is always something incredibly moreish about an Agatha Christie book, especially the Ms Marple books. I love the way she sets them up and the way all the mysteries play out. Particularly in the Ms Marples I love how much Ms Marple manipulates events from behind the scenes. You always get the impression that she has a very clear hunch on who commited the crime and why from the very beginning and all she has to do is find the evidence to prove it.
This book perfectly demostrates Ms Marples skills in deduction. It seems like the perfect crime, no body, a witness no one beleives as it was two trains passing in the night. How Ms Marple methodically goes on to discover the body and solve the crime is just ingenious and very entertaining.
I adored the addition of Lucy Eyelesbarrow. She was such an endearing character. I really loved the various interactions she had with the men within this book. It got rediculous in just the best ways. I also love that her story wasn’t wrapped up in a neat little bow, it made her seem all the more beleiveable.
I was a little disappointed in the reveal, while it was still enertaining it lacked a bit of conviction compared to other motives and just sort of fell a little flat after such a fun investigation.
