Mini Review – Mort

After being assured that being dead was not compulsory, Mort accepted. However, he soon found that romantic longings did not mix easily with the responsibilities of being Death’s apprentice.

I am a huge fan of Pratchett’s character Death. I love how much he loves life. I adored the fact that for a good portion of this book he is having an existential crisis, in a journey to find a different occupation, to find out what happiness is, experiencing life, from getting drunk to being a fry cook surrounded by kittens. These parts are a delight, the are rather life affirming in their own way.

Before death can take a holiday he needs to find a replacement, and that brings us to Mort. Mort is a fantastic character, juggling teenage angst with the responsibility and pressure of his first job. I love how he grows and learns through this story. Getting to know all the other characters is equally as fun. We get a little bit of insight into other parts of the disc too, from the wizards to the counterweight continent. Slowly building the picture of the disc and its people.

Like all the other Discworld books these are fun, fast paced and full of Pratchett’s humorous observations about life, or death for that matter. For me they are just books you know you are going to enjoy that bring a smile to your face and are just such easy and fun reads.
