Mini Review – Lord Edgeware Dies

Title: Lord Edgeware Dies

Author: Agatha Christie

Series: Hercule Poirot #9

4 stars

Rating: 4 out of 5.

From Goodreads:

Poirot had been present when Jane bragged of her plan to ‘get rid of’ her estranged husband. Now the monstrous man was dead. And yet the great Belgian detective couldn’t help feeling that he was being taken for a ride.

After all, how could Jane have stabbed Lord Edgware to death in his library at exactly the same time she was seen dining with friends? And what could be her motive now that the aristocrat had finally granted her a divorce?

My Thoughts

Another enjoyable Poirot book, And another Hastings narrated book which I always enjoy. I do love the sheer sass that radiates off of Poirot when talking to Hastings, even Inspector Japp is a bit tough on poor Hastings in this one. He really is such a loveable yet dim character. This story was interesting as we get to see Poirot falter a little. It’s the first time in the nine books so far that we have seen him be mislead by evidence or follow the wrong path and it was really fun to see it all pull together in the end with the twists and turns.

Poirot’s faltering and falling for a couple of traps along the way was a really exciting twist as Christie constructed it in such a way that we could work out the mystery before Poirot which made this mystery read a lot different than her previous books and I really enjoyed it. This story also focused on a lot of strong professional women, we had an actress, a stand up comic and a milliner all women of independent means that really knew how to hold there own. It is always surprising how much Christie’s work still holds up it never feels old fashioned in its views, particularly around ‘the modern woman’ as Christie often refers to them.

  1. So cool you have this project! I started it last year, though only focusing on Hercule Poirot. I love it too when Hugh Fraser is the narrator, he is the best! David Suchet is my favorite HP actor, but he is not the best narrator – he doesn’t know how to d female voices!! Thankfully, most are narrated by him, though my next one, #35 is narrated by Charles Armstrong.
I haven’t taken time to review them all. Here is my latest short review on this series: https://wordsandpeace.com/2021/08/22/sunday-post-44-8-22-2021/
