Friday Five – Wintery Reads

I can’t find who started the Friday Five book blog meme. It seems to crop up in many different style such as “Five for Friday”, “Five on Friday” , “FridayFive Challenge”. I also can’t find a topic list like you would have for the Six on Sunday meme. Therefore, I am just doing my own thing and setting my own topics just so I can chat books with you.

Wintery reads

The nights are drawing in, the temperatures have plummeted and Storm Arwen (love the LOTR reference) is threatening snow. I love nights like that as all excuses are wiped off the table and all you can do is snuggle up and read. So I have selected 5 reads that are loaded with snow and wintery feels that I loved.

My Review

The book that inspired this topic. While I want the biggest fan overall. I was jam packed with wintery and festive vibes. It really had the anticipation and magic of watching the festive season approach and combining that with the twists on the Nutcracker all makes it feel really wintery and festive.

The Night Circus

One of my favourite Books and I always associate with dark nights. Obviously as the Circus only opens at night and black and white theme lends it to long wintery nights. I think the descriptions of hot chocolate and the caramel combined with the magic and the whimsy of the night. Even the overly colourful New years party just drips in sparkle and opulence that just reminds me of all the lights shining out into the dark winter nights.

My Review

Beautiful descriptions of frost magic and dark winter magic mixed with a beautiful melancholy.  The writing is gorgeous and filled with gorgeous descriptions and emotion that truly made even the dark subject matter covered have a beautiful quality to them.  These is a crispness to it that just reminds me of the cold biting winds of the season. While not my favourite on the list it was still a good read.

My Review

This just reads like a classic dark and twisted fairytale from the very beginning. The use of language and description is just exactly what you would expect from a Grimm Brother’s tale. Based around Jewish folklore and set in the deep of winter and a Fae Ice palace it really captures cold long winters in a magical way.

Winternight #1

Based on the Russian folk tale of Father Frost this is just a gorgeous wintery tale. like Spinning silver it has that slight dark fairy tale edge that i just love and it is just so detailed in its descriptions that you can’t help but be absorbed into the world.
