State of the ARC TBR

State of The ARC – May TBR

For 2022 I have started a new series TBR posts and Challenges, one of which is my State of the ARC posts. I will do two posts a month; a State of the ARC TBR post and a State of the ARC Wrap up post.

These State of the ARC posts are to keep me accountable on all the ARCs I am so privileged to receive. I want to get that Netgalley rating back up to the coveted 80% as well as tell you all about some of the amazing books that are coming out each month.

This post covers my May 2022 ARCs that I want to try and read this month and tell you a little bit about each one as well as there release date etc. That way you can help keep me accountable as well as potentially looking out for new additions to your own TBR.

The start of May is very busy for ARCs and Blog tours, but quietens off at the end of the month. Therefore, I am hoping to squeeze in lots of backlist books. I will be talking about these as well as the other books on my TBR in my Tsunduku Taming post.

Release date: 3/5/22

About the book:

In Charlie Hall’s world, shadows can be altered, for entertainment and cosmetic preferences—but also to increase power and influence. You can alter someone’s feelings—and memories—but manipulating shadows has a cost, with the potential to take hours or days from your life. Your shadow holds all the parts of you that you want to keep hidden—a second self, standing just to your left, walking behind you into lit rooms. And sometimes, it has a life of its own.
Charlie is a low-level con artist, working as a bartender while trying to distance herself from the powerful and dangerous underground world of shadow trading. She gets by doing odd jobs for her patrons and the naive new money in her town at the edge of the Berkshires. But when a terrible figure from her past returns, Charlie’s present life is thrown into chaos, and her future seems at best, unclear—and at worst, non-existent. Determined to survive, Charlie throws herself into a maelstrom of secrets and murder, setting her against a cast of doppelgangers, mercurial billionaires, shadow thieves, and her own sister—all desperate to control the magic of the shadows.
With sharp angles and prose, and a sinister bent, Holly Black is a master of shadow and story stitching. Remember while you read, light isn’t playing tricks in Book of Night, the people are.

About the book:

Wendy just wants to be a poet. So how comes she’s on the run after an art heist?

An aspiring writer from the Southside of Glasgow, Wendy is in a rut. She tries to brighten her call-center job by shoehorning as many long words as possible into conversations with customers. But her manager isn’t amused by that and, after a public dressing-down, Wendy walks out.
Jobless and depressed, she finds consolation in a surprise friendship with another disgruntled ex-colleague, wild-child painter Cat, who encourages her to live more dangerously. It’s just what Wendy needs and it’s also brilliant for her creative juices. But a black cloud is about to overshadow this new-found liberation, as well as to put Wendy on the wrong side of the law.
Fresh, insightful and funny, as well as unflinchingly honest about the tougher side of life, Kenny Boyle’s debut novel takes us deep into the psyche of a likeable misfit who treads a fine line between reality and fantasy – and just wants the world to see her true self.
