Naughty or Nice Book tag

I completed this tag for the past few yeara and it is really fun so I thought I would update it for this year and see if I am getting bookish presents or a lump of coal in my stocking this year!

As far as I can tell it was originally created by Jen of Jenniely. The aims of the game it to answer the questions and find out at the end if you are on Santa’s bookish Nice list or Naughty List

Received an ARC and not reviewed it

eARCs Yes, I really need to set the clearing of my NetGalley shelf as a priority. 2022 has been another amazing reading year but it has also had its low moments that meant I fell behind on my ARC reading. Catching Covid in August sent me into a huge reading slump that I have only just broken out of so maybe I can catch up on a few more over the holidays.

Have less than 60% feedback rating on Netgalley

My rating is currently 54%. I will say this is the exact same number as last year which means I have red as many as I have received just not all the ones I have received.

I have recently gotten approved for a whole bunch of books for the beginning of next year which I wont be getting too until closer to their release dates but even then I have a shameful number I just have not read yet!

Rated a book on goodreads and promised a full review was to come on your blog (and never did)

No (not technically)

I have basically just ignored Goodreads reviews this year. I do rate but I haven’t moved my reviews over. I probably do need to get back to sharing my reviews on Goodreads. Maybe that can be a goal for 2023

Folded down the page of a book

But I personally don’t think that is a naughty thing to do with my own books. If I am borrowing I will always use a book mark. But with my own books, its my books, my rules, and I can do what ever I want with them

Accidentally spilled on a book

I cant remember spilling or getting food on anything I have read this year.

DNF a book this year

I can’t actually remember DNFing a book this year. There have been books I have drifted away from but I do actually want to finish but none that I have actively placed on the DNF pile. I distinguish between the two. For me DNFing a book means I am not a fan and I will not ever be finishing it. There are books I start that I maybe am not in the mood for or I don’t have the time for in that moment that I will bookmark and drift away from but I will come back to them at some point so I don’t count them as DNFs.

Bought a book purely because it was pretty with no intention of reading it

But I do have pretty editions of books I have read where I have not read that edition. So for example I have a gorgeous version of Spinning Silver but I read my paper back version. Or I have the Fairyloot edition of Her Majesties Royal Coven but I listened to the audiobook ARC instead. They are gorgeous editions that I have not physically read but I have read the stories they contain, if that makes sense. I am still counting this as a no.

Read whilst you were meant to be doing something else (like homework)

I am saying no for this one as I do occasionally pick up my book while I am working but its usually because I am having to wait for an analysis to finish and I read a page or two while waiting instead of trolling through twitter etc. I do listen to audiobooks while working but my job allows for me to do that.

Skim read a book

I don’t remember skim reading any books this year.

Completely missed your Goodreads goal

I only have 3 books left on my good reads goal and a lot of time to sit and read so I think I will pass it no problem. (I still need to add my BBNYA books to my Goodreads but that will be after the winners are announced)

Borrowed a book and not returned it

All my library loans this year were digital so automatically returned and I haven’t borrowed any books from friends this year. I have

Broke a book buying ban

I haven’t been on a book buying ban this year so there was no ban to break. I have had a few months where there wasn’t anything new on the market that interested me so I didn’t buy any books. My backlist is still huge though but I find book buying bans don’t work for me.

Started a review, left it for ages then forgot what the book was about

I do this too often. I have my bullet journal set up to take notes on every book I read but there have been books I have just raced through so haven’t stopped to take notes and then when I come to review them and look back at my notes I have a blank page. I tend to have to skim a synopsis just to remind myself, what went on to rearrange my feelings about it and write my review. Or I just don’t review it.

Wrote in a book you were reading

Not this year

I love annotating books! Especially those that mean something to me. I don’t see this as being Naughty, if they are your books you can do what ever you like with them. But I haven’t had much time for annotating this year. I have just been to absorbed in reading.

Finished a book and not added it to your Goodreads

I tend to re-read a lot and I won’t add them in but I haven’t done a lot of re-reads this year so apart from the BBNYA books which I will add after the winners are announced I will have added them all.

Dodged someone asking if they can borrow a book

I don’t often lend out my books, especially not signed or special editions and I will just be frank and tell anyone asking that. I did unhaul a lot of books this year though (50+ all went to a friend who is an English teacher for her classroom library)

Broke the spine of someone else’s book

I have only really borrowed digitally this year so no spines to break

Took the jacket off a book to protect it and ended up making it more damaged

Maisie the cat strikes again. She had a habit of biting lone dust jackets, But I have learnt to hide them from her. Usually I put them on the bookshelf they came from to keep them safe. Mogget has taken to nibbling hardbacks too which I am most annoyed about.

Sat on a book accidentally

Not that I can think of. I probably have at some point, I can guarantee several cat butts have made there way onto books do they count?

Final Score

I make it on the Nice list this year! I scored much better than I did last year. That means bookish Santa has to be good to me this year Yes?
