From Goodreads:

When retired FBI Agent Patrick Henderson calls in an ‘X-Ray Sierra India’ incident, the operator doesn’t understand. He tells them to pass it up the chain till someone does.

That person is FBI Special Agent Kimberley Reynolds. Leaving Quantico for snowbound Northern Wisconsin, she finds that a tornado has flattened half the town – and there’s no sign of Henderson.

Things soon go from weird to worse, as neighbours report unsettling sightings, key evidence goes missing, and the snow keeps rising – cutting off the town, with no way in or out…

Something terrible is awakening. As the clues lead to the coldest of cold cases – a cursed expedition into the frozen wilderness – Reynolds follows a trail from the start of the American nightmare, to the horror that still lives on today…

My Thoughts

You know I am always going to love these books. The World of PC Peter Grant and The Folly are always going to be high star reads for me as I am just too invested at this time. Winter’s Gifts is the third book in a four novella mini series that focuses on characters outside of Peter and London. We have had tales told from Abigal and her Foxes perspective, and a visit to Germany and how the magic police opperate there. This time around we are heading across the atlantic to see how FBI Agent Kimberley Reynolds, as featured in Whispers Undergroud, is enjoying her new role in investigating all the spooky stuff.

I really enjoyed this as it took such a fun departure in tone from the Peter Grant books. I like the small town america feel. It had very x-files/twinpeaks/criminal minds vibes too it, especially in the pacing. I really enjoyed how the stereotypes of Female FBI agent were played with. The integration of Native culture with the magic of the US vs the Virginia Men that we have met before was a really nice way of describing how different the USA treats magic. I also liked how we got to know more about Kimberley and we got insight into her homelife, upbringing, religion and even got a little romance plot line.

I would love to chat all things bookish with you! You can comment down below or find me on Twitter or Goodreads!

Happy Reading!

  1. Winter’s Gifts is a delightful departure from the Peter Grant series, with a small-town American feel reminiscent of X-Files and Twin Peaks. The exploration of Native culture and the integration of magic in the US provide fascinating insights. Did you enjoy the change in tone? What did you think of Kimberley Reynolds as a character? Any theories on the cursed expedition?
