All her life, Spensa has dreamed of becoming a pilot. Of proving she’s a hero like her father. She made it to the sky, but the truths she learned about her father were crushing.
Spensa is sure there’s more to the story. And she’s sure that whatever happened to her father in his starship could happen to her. When she made it outside the protective shell of her planet, she heard the stars–and it was terrifying. Everything Spensa has been taught about her world is a lie.
But Spensa also discovered a few other things about herself–and she’ll travel to the end of the galaxy to save humankind if she needs to.
I have to admit I liked this book better than Skyward. Sanderson is known for his world building and this really show cases it in all its glory. It also encompasses one of Sanderson other fortes, and that is his ability to write fantastic and interesting political intrigue.
Personally I really loved the characters in Starsight. There was just such inventiveness to all the various Alien races we encountered. For me of course the Kitsen were a delight but I really liked Vapour, it was an interesting concept and I hope the character continues on within the next book in the series. Spensa was a lot more level headed, but just as personable as before. I think it is great that we are learning about this universe as she is, but also that she is so reliant on others to get through it all. She doesn’t have the chosen one vibe as much and I rather enjoy that. I will continue to love Mbot as I do adore sassy AI and Doom slug is jut precious. We unfortunately do not get as much of our favourite side characters from Skyward but that is made up for greatly by Spensa’s new environment.
The plot obviously takes away from home, and I think that is great. It is shifts the story line and while we still get the dogfights in space, we also get a lot of political machinations, history into the overall universe and then also explore both Spensa’s life and Mbot’s origins. It has a great combination of action and witty banter with more slower elements. And there are some amazing twists! We got yet another cliffhanger ending and again it was a bit of a peter out rather than a leaving us in shock and again i felt the ending was a little rushed overall. But I really did enjoy this story.
I will say i did get a chance to listen to a few chapters of this on audiobook and the UK version is fantastic. There is some real interesting choices of accenting which I kinda loved. There is something rather fun about alien races with Brummy and Scouse accents or a sassy AI with a Scottish twang. So I would recommend the audiobook also.
