January Wrap up

January is finally over. It is was actually a really awesome reading month for me. I had some really amazing reads and some real disappointing reads too, but the good far outweighed the bad. I have just as busy TBR for February so I am hoping I can read just as much this month.

Book of the Month

The Once and Future Witches
Alix E. Harrow

Rating: 5 out of 5.

My Review

I adore Alix E. Harrow’s style of writing, and this was just gorgeous. I really loved the retellings of the various fairytales that a dotted throughout the story, they are unique yet still have that classical feel to them. The magic system was also fabulous, simple and elegant in its description. I loved that we got a new spell with each chapter. It was just a beautiful book start to finish.

WHAT I READ –

The Fey and the Furious
Ben Aaronovich

The Rivers of London Graphic Novel #8

Rating: 3 out of 5.

I continue to enjoy these graphic novel series. This wasn’t one of my favourites but it is always fun to get a little more insight into Peter’s escapades between novels. This one explored the Fey would a little more and saw the return of some characters from Peter’s jaunt out to the countryside in Foxglove summer.

Men At Arms
Terry Pratchett

Discworld #15, City Watch #2

Rating: 5 out of 5.

My Review

I love these books they are hilariously funny. I really think this might have become my favourite Discworld book I have read so far (though I still have a lot left to read) It just tackles so many (still) relevent topics with Prachett’s expected dry wit and excellent insight.

An Argumentiation of Historians
Jodi Taylor

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

Chronicles of St May’s # 9

Another emotional rollercoaster from Jodi Taylor. it took a rather more sedate pace compared to other books but it really had me almost paranoid. I just didn’t trust Taylor not to harm my babies and kill my darlings. It was almost emotional torture as she just tugged on my heart the whole way through. I really loved this instalment yet again and book 10 will be on my TBR as soon as I can make room.

The Battersea Barricades
Jodi Taylor

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Chronicles of St May’s # 9.5

Taylors short stories are always awesome. Fun little asides that give a little bit on insight and a little more colour to the world around Maxwell. This one we finally get the story of the World Max lives in. We get what happened in Battersea and why Mrs Endeby is a force to be reckoned with. It was really rather emotional.

The Steam Pump Jump
Jodi Taylor

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Chronicles of St May’s # 9.6

Another story from Markham’s perspective is always welcome. he really is one of my favourite characters, also finally Peterson gets a bit of a break. This makes it such a sweet story. It also finally settles some disputes which had complicated the main storyline.

And Now For Something Completely Different
Jodi Taylor

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Chronicles of St May’s # 9.7

This was super fun we go back to the alternative time line but too its future (yes its complicated) we also get a bit more from the Time Police’s perspective while dealing with St Mary’s escapades to Mars of all places!

A Study in Scarlett
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

Sherlock Holmes #1

My Review

I was really surprised at how much I enjoyed this and how little I actually knew of the story particularly when it appeared to change tone from Victorian detective fiction to Western. It was a enjoyable read.

The Murder of Roger Ackroyd
Agatha Christie

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Hercule Poirot #4

This was a re-read for me where I buddy read it with a group from The Write Reads Gang. I got to read my stunning Folio Society copy. this is my favourite Poirot and inspired me to restart my Agatha Christie project which I will hopefully be re-launching this month.

The Song Rising
Samantha Shannon

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

The Bone Season #3

My Review

I really enjoy Shannon’s writing but I do find it fairly linear without any side storylines to follow. This one did have a lot more adventure exploring the world outside Scion London. It really got me back into the series.

The Dawn Chorus
Samantha Shannon

Rating: 4 out of 5.

The Bone Season #3.5

My Review

This was a nice little aside in the Bone Season series. It gave a lot more insight into Paige and what had been through and how she was healing. It was a much needed conversation of in both physical and mental health.

The Mask Falling
Samantha Shannon

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

The Bone Season #4

My Review

I really enjoyed this book. There are plot twists and reveals a plenty, exploring Scion Paris, how it’s underworld functions, the return of unexpected familiar faces and a lot of political intrigue all over the place. his Book really got me excited for the series again and I hope that we don’t need to wait too long to see how it continues.

Secrets of the Starcrossed
Clara O’Connor

Rating: 1.5 out of 5.

Secret’s of the Starcrossed

My Review

Oh this was such a disappointment. I read the the blurb about the setting for this and went Yes! Roman Londinium survived and grew into a bustling metropolis with roman rule, and undercurrents of celtic magic. What we got was lack lustre lazy worldbuilding, a luke warm romance. For a NA book it read like a bad YA, it just wasn’t for me.

A Pinch of Magic
Michelle Harrison

Rating: 4 out of 5.

A Pinch of Magic #1

My Review

I read this as part of the Middle Grade Marvel’s book of the Month, and it hasnt done me wrong yet. This was a fun read. So much darker than I expected. I loved the sisters, all the twists and turns. I have dived straight into book two this month and will hopefully have my review for that up very soon.

Of Wicked Blood
Olivia Wildenstein and Katie Hayoz

Rating: 4 out of 5.

The Quatrefoil Chronicles #1

My Review

Initially I really enjoyed this book. I flew through it and gave it 4 stars as I had a couple of little issues with the writing style that pulled me out of the story, but overall I thought it was interesting and exciting read. However, since interacting with the author on twitter about my review (which she took issue with an opinion I had) I just am not as hyped as I was for book two which is a shame as it was a good read.

Clockwork Princess
Cassandra Clare

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Infernal Devices #3

Shadowhunter’s Sat post

I am not going to say much here as all my thoughts both Spoiler and Non-spoiler can be found in Shadowhunter’s Saturday posts both here and on Ellie’s blog too. Reading this series with Ellie is just so much fun and I am so excited that Erika is going to be joining us too. More reaction gifs and giggle to send back and forth!

Winter’s Orbit
Everina Maxwell

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

My Review

I finished this late last Sunday night and I am still thinking about it. I was so tempted to make it my book of the month for that reason alone, but then I remembered Once and Future witches and it captured my heart just that little bit more. However, Winter’s orbit is just beautiful. I am not usually one for the miscommunication trope but this did it perfectly then added in some interesting worldbuilding and space opera mystery too. It just had that little dash of everything to make it such a fun read.

I feel these keep getting longer! I think I am well on my way to hit my Goodreads goal for the year at least. looking back there were some really awesome reads this month a couple of which are making it straight onto the re-read list. others that have me grabbing the next book in the series.
