March is upon us and this month instead of my normal TBR game I am doing a few readathons and trying to finish my stack of ARCs. I am participating is the month long Trope-ical Readathon. This is a readathon hosted by @jenjenreviews and @bookrob13 on Twitter!
The Trope-ical readathon is a team base readathon, focusing on genres and their common tropes. I, obviously, picked to be on team Sci-Fi/Fantasy . There are 13 general challenges based on well known tropes (with an alternate prompt too) and 2 team prompts as well as a group read. All of which add up to points for your team! You can find all the details about how this readathon works HERE.
Absent/Dead Parent(s) Trope:
Read a book that has more than one “parent” (i.e. multiple authors).
The Last Spell Breather
This is one of two buddy reads in the Middle Grade Marvels books Club and it sounds fantastic! It sounds like it is going to have a really interesting magic system. I always have so much fun reading with this group. I am hoping this will suit this prompt as an extended blurb hints as the Main characters mother going missing so I think it should count.
War Setting Trope:
a book that is over 500 pages.
C. L. Clark
Magic of the Lost #1
I have been eager to start this ARC as it sounds like it is going the be such an interesting read. It seems like it is going to be one of those books that is going to be filled with political Machinations, witty banter and angst as well as POC rep and a Sapphic romance!
Small Town Trope:
read a book with a small (i.e. one-word) title..
J. A White
Middle grade Marvels
The second buddy read from the Middle Grade Marvels book club it sounds like such an interesting twist on the One thousand and one nights tale with horror twists. Some middle grade horror can get real creepy and I hope that does have a little bit of spine chilling.
read a book that someone else has chosen for you.
This sounded so interesting. A murder mystery across time. I enjoy a good police procedural and this one seems to combine the cut throat world of high fashion, and AI gone rogue. I think I might really enjoy this one.
Blast from the Past Trope:
Read a book written before the year 2000.
The Lord of the Rings
The Lord of the Rings
The Write Reads Buddy Reads
Continuing with the Lord of the Rings read along with my friends from the write reads. We will be reading book 2 (the second half of The fellowship of the ring) and book 3 (the first half of two towers) during the month of March. I finally made it past Tom Bombadil! and i am super excited to keep going with these sections
Mixed Media Trope:
Listen to an audiobook.
The Absolute Book
Another fantasy police procedural, which I really enjoy I have been given access to the audio book via Netgalley and I am really interested to dive in. This is a chunky book and I am glad I have it on audio and it seems like it is going to be weird and wonderful.
Artificial Intelligence Trope:
Read read an ebook.
Murderbot Diaries #4
A prompt about AI there is only one choice, The Murderbot diaries. I have loved this series so far and I really cant wait to continue (Its probably going to be the first book I pick up, If I am honest). There is just so much heart and soul in these books, they make me smile.
(re)read a book that shaped who you are as a person/reader.
All the Murmuring Bones
A. G. Slatter
I have heard mixed things about this ARC but I think it could be an interesting one with a little bit of mystery to it and a strong connection to the sea. I am hoping it fits this prompt as its hard to tell if it is going to be a coming of age story.
Enemies to Lovers/Enemies to Friends Trope:
Read a book that you previously unfinished.
An Ember in the Ashes
An Ember in the Ashes #1
I have been wanting to read this series for ages but never got around to it but my absolutely gorgeous Fairyloot special Editions, so its the perfect excuse to finally pick them up. I know a lot of people that rave about this series and I am really excited to get started
Boarding School Trope:
read a buddy-read with your friend(s).
City of Fallen Angels
Mortal Instruments #4
Ellie, Erika and I are continuing our journey through the Shadowhunter universe. We are finally going back to finish off the Mortal instruments. Its going to be interesting returning to Jace and Clary’s story.
The New Kid in Town Trope:
Read a genre you don’t usually read.
I was invited and preapproved to read this by the publisher, I don’t usually read psychological suspense thrillers but this one does sound interesting and its set in Edinburgh. It sounds like it is going to be really dark and twisty. Maybe this will get me to pick up the genre more often
Read a book that has been adapted to a TV show and/or film.
The Shadow in the Glass
Cinderella retellings are ten a penny but this one is already getting awesome reviews. It is supposedly a really dark and gothic retelling of Cinderella and has been blurbed as for fans of Erin Morgernstern which we know I am.
“Secret World” Trope:
Across the Green Grass Fields
Wayward Children #6
My pre-order finally showed up! I adore this series and I have been itching to start this. It is another contender for first book I read. This whole series dives in and out of new worlds and I can’t wait to discover the one in this instalment.
“First Contact” Trope:
A history of what comes next
I love Sylvain Neuvel’s writing and now he is writing A darkly satirical first contact thriller! It sounds really exciting, unfortunately its not been getting great reviews from people I trust so far so we will just have to see what I think.
This Golden Flame
I had an eARC of this one but didn’t manage to get to it before it was released earlier this month. Secretive group of scribes, hidden automatons and a fight for power. This sounds like something I will like.
Thats the 15 books I have selected for the Tropical readathon. I still have a couple more on my TBR so I will have my TBR game, ARC round up and Buddy reads post up later this week!
