Friday 5 – Middle Grades I Love

I can’t find who started the Friday Five book blog meme. It seems to crop up in many different style such as “Five for Friday”, “Five on Friday” , “FridayFive Challenge”. I also can’t find a topic list like you would have for the Six on Sunday meme. Therefore I am just doing my own thing and setting my own topics just so I can chat books with you.

Five Middle Grade books I love

These are five middle grade/ children’s books that I have really enjoyed. I really like reading books for all ages. Children’s books have a way of being both entertaining and profound in aspects, they make you think outside the box even as an adult and also just remind you of the joy of well told stories. Its why I love taking part in Middle Grade Marvels book club where we have discovered some amazing reads over the past year. So I took a look at my children’s book shelf and have picked out five that I have loved through the years.

My Review

I was so lucky to get a physical ARC of this one as part of on of The Write Reads Ultimate Blog Tours. It was such an amazing and magical read, think the fun and investigative nature of Men in Black mixed with the magic and belonging we all found in Harry Potter before JKR ruined it. There is so much representation which is always amazing to see and so much imagination, and possibilities this series can dive into.

My Review

This whole series is a booklovers dream. I defy any bookworm not to want Book wandering powers like Tilly and her family, or to want to visit The British Under Library. I know I definitely would. Its one of those books that inspires you to pick up other books too. There are so many classics mentioned and it inspired me to pick some of them back up again. Its such a fun story centred around the love of loosing yourself in books.

Nevermoor

My review

Nevermoor is a strange and mystical land that just has so many fantastically weird and wonderful things to explore. It has the vibe of Dahl and Dr Who with the magical school trope that I love. Its Whimsical but also dark at the same time and again has a level of inventiveness and humour that just keeps me interested. I have the third book sitting on my shelves and I really need to pick it up soon.

My Review

This book was beautiful and even though I read it all the way back in 2019 it has stuck in my mind. It had some of the darkest most epic worldbuilding I have come across in children’s book. The plot focuses on recognising toxic friendships and when to let go of them which is also such an important lesson we all need. It also has fantastic incorporation of deaf characters. I really enjoyed it.

Out of the Hitler Time #1

I haven’t read this book in a couple of decades. This is a childhood favourite of mine. I wont discuss it more just now as I have a top 5 post coming up about them. Most people will know Judith Kerr as the woman who created Mog the Cat and the associated picture books (and Sainsburys Christmas advert). This is a semi-autobiographical book telling a fictionalised account of how her family fled the Nazis. I read it when I was about 7/8 and it stuck with me ever since. I am keen to re-read it and see how a feel about it as an adult.
