Despite there being a large number of Readathons that I really enjoy taking part in happening in the month of September I have decided I am not doing any of them. Instead I am being a little looser with my TBR. I am going to be doing a kind of #SCIFISeptember . I won’t really be paying much attention to the bingo board instead I am focusing on reading sci-fi books set in deep space, some sci-fi mysteries as my current WIP in is shaping up to be a deep space sci-fi mystery and I wanted to read/ re-read around the genre to get a feel for it as I world build my own novel. As I am gearing up my own writing I am also adding a craft book or two into my TBRs.
I will also be loosely taking part in my own version of Subscription box September, this aims to tackle those books you got from subscription boxes that have languished on your shelves. I have to admit there are a few I have been itching to get to or to finish that will be on my TBR for this month. ~
Then I also have my usual collection of ARCs and Buddy reads to get to.

Sci Fi September

The Collapsing Empire
John Scalzi
The interdependency #1
Re-read
I am re-reading this as I really like aspects of the worldbuilding that Scalzi has done within this series and I know it will influence my own work as I am a huge Scalzi fan so I am hoping to re-read and identify anything that might be a little bit too close between my world building and his.

Places in the Darkness
Chris Bookmyre
Bookmyre is one of my favourite authors, he writes a lot of crime fiction as Chris Brookmyre, Christopher Brookmyre and Ambrose Parry (in conjunction with his wife) as I am wanting to get hints and ideas for how to build an interesting space based mystery, Brookmyre’s space based mystery is a must read.
Subscription Box September

The Jasmine Throne
Tasha Suri
Illumicrate
This is a gorgeous edition of these books and I have been wanted to sit down and dedicate time to it since it arrived in June. So I am clearing room for it now. I think I am going to love this one.

The Prison Healer
Lynette Noni
Fairyloot
Another stunning edition but another one that arrived when my tbr was chocabloc with ARCs and Tours so I haven’t had a chance to pick it up. I have heard nothing but praise for this book so I am eger to get started.

Redemptor
Jordan Ifueko
Illumicrate/Fairyloot
Yes I bought both versions of this one. I couldn’t resist. I just needed both as they were just so beautiful. I am re-reading Raybaerer as part of a buddy read (see below) so I am hoping to jump straight into this one after we have finished.

The Hollow Heart
Marie Rutkoski
Forgotten gods #2
eARC
Release date: 9/9/21
I enjoyed Midnight lie (you can read my review) but the pacing left me a little torn but the ending was knock out and had me itching for book too so when the eARC landed in my inbox last week I just knew I had to get it straight on a TBR

Defy the Night
Bridgid Kemmerer
Defy the Night #1
eARC
Release date: 14/9/21
From the blurb this promises to be a really action packed start to a new YA fantasy series and I am rather looking forward to it. Its been a minute since I have dived into YA fantasy and I am hoping this one will live up to the hype.

The Devil makes Three
Tori Bovalino
eARC
Release date: 14/9/21
A book set in a magical boarding school library with book bound demons this just sounds like a glorious book. I know my illumicrate copy is about to arrive and I suspect its going to be a gorgeous edition so I am excited.

Once upon a broken heart
Stephine Garber
eARC
Release date: 30/9/21
I enjoyed the Caraval series, they were fun and light reads. This book is rumoured to be in the same universe but with fresh set of characters. the blurb also makes it seem a little darker and I am interested to see how it all plays out.

The Liar of Red Valley
Walter Goodwater
Physical ARC
Release date: 14/9/21
I haven’t read a lot of American Gothic books but this one has me intrigued, with a little bit of paranormal and a lot of mystery I think this one will really be interesting. I am hearing great things and that it really is a book that keeps you on you toes.

Raybearer
Jordan Ifueko
Raybearer #1
Some of us in the Write reads gang have a monthly buddy read and this one won this months vote. It will be a re-read for me but I know I will enjoy getting to discuss it with others and having the excuse to pick up redemptor straight afterwards. plus it means I can crack open my pretty new illumicrate edition.

Beast
Matt Wesoloski
Six stories #4
I have been buddy reading this whole series and loving them. I have been listening to them on audiobook as the podcast formatting of the novels really lend themselves to audio. I really hope this one is just as twisting and turning as the others in the series

Lord Edgeware Dies
Agatha Christie
Hercule Poirot #9
Its month 9 so we are onto book 9 of our Hercule Poirot buddy read. I am enjoying dipping into one of these books each month and getting to spend an evening or two with the great Belgian detective. I have been updating my thoughts in my Agatha Christie project page

Creating Character Arcs
K.M Weiland
I am currently in the stage of my Work in Progress (WIP) that means I am building up my characters, their personalities, roles within my story, their back stories and anything else I find interesting. So reading about character creation will be helpful when I am trying to establish al these elements for my own characters.

Wonderbook
Jeff Vandermeer
This book is just a work of art in its own right. It is various essays, vingnettes and little exercises about world building, chracter creating and constructing your novel and with all the gorgeous illustrations, diagrams etc I think I am really going to enjoy diving into this one.
I would love to chat all things bookish with you! You can comment down below or find me on Twitter or Goodreads!
Happy Reading!
I am so hyped for The Hollow Heart! I want to read Once Upon A Broken Heart but have only read Caraval so far, and I’m not sure I have enough time to catch up in September with everything else coming out.
