I completed this tag last year and it was fun so I thought I would update it for this year and see if I am getting bookish presents or a lump of coal in my stocking this year!
As far as I can tell it was originally created by Jen of Jenniely. The aims of the game it to answer the questions and find out at the end if you are on Santa’s bookish Nice list or Naughty List.
Questions
Received an ARC and not reviewed it
Yes
eARCs Yes, I really need to set the clearing of my NetGalley shelf as a priority. 2021 has been both an amazing reading year and completely hectic so I have fallen behind on a number of eARCs that I just haven’t had time to get to. I also have some I have started and not finished and a collection of early 2022 releases that need to be read.
Have less than 60% feedback rating on Netgalley
Yes
My rating is currently 54%. In my defence I have recently gotten approved for a whole bunch of books for the beginning of next year which I wont be getting too until closer to their release dates but even then I have a shameful number I just have not read yet!
Rated a book on goodreads and promised a full review was to come on your blog (and never did)
No (not technically)
I have basically just ignored Goodreads reviews this year. I do rate but I haven’t moved my reviews over. I have such a back log of blog reviews that need to make there way on to Goodreads (like most of this years reviews) so I might just have to spend an afternoon spamming everyone who follows me Goodreads feed as I upload them all. Sounds like a perfect thing to do with an audiobook one of these long winter nights.
Folded down the page of a book
Yes
But I personally don’t think that is a naughty thing to do with my own books. If I am borrowing I will always use a book mark. I have gotten a lot better at actually using my bookmarks this year and not just random bits of paper, my phone, the arm of the couch etc. I have such a large and fun collection of books marks it is a shame not to use them so I have made a conscience effort to pick a book mark out for each book. But I did, while reading the Appeal, fold down the corner of a page so I could refer back to it easily. I didn’t have any sticky notes so it was the next best thing! Also my book, my rules
Accidentally spilled on a book
No
I cant remember spilling or getting food on anything I have read this year.
DNF a book this year
No
I can’t actually remember DNFing a book this year. There have been books I have drifted away from but I do actually want to finish but none that I have actively placed on the DNF pile. I distinguish between the two. For me DNFing a book means I am not a fan and I will not ever be finishing it. There are books I start that I maybe am not in the mood for or I don’t have the time for in that moment that I will bookmark and drift away from but I will come back to them at some point so I don’t count them as DNFs.
Bought a book purely because it was pretty with no intention of reading it
No
This isn’t really a thing I do. I have bought pretty editions of favourite books but as I have most likely read them multiple times I think having multiple copies is ok. I don’t tend to purely cover buy.
Read whilst you were meant to be doing something else (like homework)
No
I am saying no for this one as I do occasionally pick up my book while I am working but its usually because I am having to wait for an analysis to finish and can’t use my laptop while it is running so I read a couple of pages to pass the time. Working from home this year has let me get a bit more reading in. As I don’t have my long commute I can get all the housework etc done during my usual commute time meaning I can relax more in my time off of working.
Skim read a book
Yes
I don’t tend to skim read books, but this year there was a couple that I just werent gelling with but had commited to review so I skimmed to get the last few chapters done.
Completely missed your Goodreads goal
No
I have surpassed my Goodreads goal for the year! And I am hoping to go over by quite a bit by the end of the year. I set it for 100 books and I have currently read 141! With a lot of time off work coming up I am sure I will have a lot more reading time.
Borrowed a book and not returned it
Yes
I have a couple of books that are given by a friend that I have not returned yet (I did not ask to borrow them she insisted I took them to read). I haven’t read them yet. They are actually the same books I mentioned in last years Tag , and the year before that- Yikes. I need to accept I am not going to read them and give them back don’t I?
Broke a book buying ban
No
I haven’t been on a book buying ban this year so there was no ban to break. I have had a few months where there wasn’t anything new on the market that interested me so I didn’t buy any books and there have been times when I have seen a book i have been interested in and decided not to pick it up until I have got through more of my backlist. I think I am going to take this approach more next year. No book buying ban just more of a focus on clearing my TBR before I add more.
Started a review, left it for ages then forgot what the book was about
Yes
I do this too often. I have my bullet journal set up to take notes on every book I read but there have been books I have just raced through so haven’t stopped to take notes and then when I come to review them and look back at my notes I have a blank page. I tend to have to skim a synopsis just to remind myself, what went on to rearrange my feelings about it and write my review. Or I just don’t review it.
Wrote in a book you were reading
Not this year
I love annotating books! Especially those that mean something to me. I don’t see this as being Naughty, if they are your books you can do what ever you like with them. But I haven’t had much time for annotating this year. I have just been to absorbed in reading.
Finished a book and not added it to your Goodreads
Yes
I do this quiet often. I routinely listen to favourite books in Audiobook format to help me get to sleep. I have listened to the Night Circus and River’s of London Audiobooks several times this year I just don’t record them on Goodreads. I don’t count them towards my reading goal as I am not bothered if I fall asleep and miss anything as I know the stories so well. I only count these as re-reads if I pick up the physical copies again.
Dodged someone asking if they can borrow a book
No
I don’t often lend out my books, especially not signed or special editions and I will just be frank and tell anyone asking that. Also the global pandemic limits the people I see that I would trust with my books.
Broke the spine of someone else’s book
No
Not to my knowledge. But I have not borrowed a lot of books recently due to the whole global pandemic causing libraries to close and not being able to meet with friends.
Took the jacket off a book to protect it and ended up making it more damaged
Yes
Maisie the cat strikes again. She had a habit of biting lone dust jackets, But I have learnt to hide them from her. Usually I put them on the bookshelf they came from to keep them safe.
Sat on a book accidentally
No
Not that I can think of. I probably have at some point, I can guarantee several cat butts have made there way onto books do they count?
Final Score
8/19
I make it on the Nice list this year, still Naughtier than I was last year by 1 point. That means bookish Santa has to be good to me this year Yes?
