My 2021 TBR Game January TBR

As I said in my 2021 Reading Challenges and Goals post I want to try and conquer my owned TBR. Last year I devised a TBR game to help me tackle them and encourage me to choose reads from my shelves over new additions. It will hopefully reduce the number of new additions I make until I have started to make a dent in the number. I wasn’t the best at sticking to the game as the year went on and I ended up reading more ARCs and new releases than books from my shelves but I am hoping to stay more focused on these books this year. I have also switched up the to encourage me to read from my kindle and my net galley backlog.

Taking influence from the games of Becca from Becca and the Books and Jade from Jadeyraereads, which I love watching every month. I dug out a dice I received as part of a trivial pursuit questions game, the pie and the pie pieces and set to work reorganising my TBR shelves, marking all the books I want to read/re-read (sooner rather than later) on them.

The Dice has six colours that represent the six categories I have broken my TBR down into. As follows:

The DICE Key

How the Game will Work

At the beginning of each month I will do the following steps:

Roll the DICE

I will repeat this till I have a six book TBR all chosen from my shelves. I decided to do this method over a TBR jar as it gives me the freedom to mood read. I also think six is a nice number as it gives me freedom to keep up with ARCs, new releases and to do readathons.

I have decided there will be consequences for not completing my TBR. If I do not read a combination of 6 books from my TBR shelves I will allow myself to roll over the books to the next month. If I have not completed them within two months I will have to unhaul the same amount.

January TBR

Roll 1 – Blue – Sci-fi

An Argumentation of Historians
Jodi Taylor

The Chronicles of St Marys #9

After finishing book 8 late in 2020 and it being one of the best books of this series I just have to dive back into this world to see how it continues. I adore this world, all the adventures of Max and the gang. Each book in the series has its own unique and exciting elements and I just love them start to finish. I am rapidly catching up with the series now and I am hoping I can read book 10 and 11 before the release of book 12 later this year. My Review of book 8 should be up shortly.

Roll 2 – Blue – Sci-fi

A Memory called Empire
Arkady Martine

Teixcalaan #1

I have had this book on my shelves for some time now and I have been meaning to pick it up as I have heard fantastic things. I have also been very fortunate to be granted access to the eARC of the second book in the series so I have to get to this one before I can add that to my TBR so this month is as good as any.

Roll 3 – Green – Netgalley Backlog

The Once and Future Witches
Alix E. Harrow

This was one of my most anticipated reads of 2020 and I was so excited when I got accepted for an eARC. However, when it became time to read it I was just far to swamped to give it the time it deserved and while I started it I have never finished it. I now own a physical copy as it came from the November Illumicrate box. So this month is the month to pick it up.

Roll 4 – Pink – Fantasy

The Song Rising
Samantha Shannon

Bone Season #3

As you will see from later on in this post that I have been fortunate enough to be accepted for eARC for The Falling Mask the fourth in this series. I have to admit I have yet to read the third book in the series. I have even owned this book longer than book 1 and 2 as I found the Waterstones sprayed edged copy in my local charity shop for a couple of pounds and I just couldn’t pass it up. I finished books one and two last year so its the perfect time to continue with the series.

Roll 5 – Purple – YA

Clockwork Princess
Cassandra Clare

Infernal devices #3

Part of Ellie and I’s Shadowhunter Saturday, due to us being busy in the last quarter of the year we never managed to get to the last book in the Infernal devices series but we are determined to get back to it and so will definitely be continuing with Clockwork princess this month. I have been enjoying out readalongs so far and it will be nice to finish off this series and how it will end.

Roll 6 – Orange – Misc

The Fey and the Furious
Ben Aaronovich

Rivers of London Graphic novel Vol 8

It is well known how much I love the Rivers of London so while this is a more recent addition to my shelves I had to dive in to read it. The graphic novels are always good fun. They fill in lots of little bits of information, little in jokes and add a few exciting adventures. I am very much looking forward to the next Novella from Ben Aaronovitch and this will keep me going while I wait.

The Mask Falling
Samantha Shannon

The Bone Season #4

Release date: 26th Jan 2021

As I said above I was lucky enough to get an eARC for this latest instalment of the Bone season. I have been enjoying the series so far. I really have enjoyed what I have read of the series so far. The main character is great, and the world is really interesting so I am keen to read on.

Secrets of the Starcrossed
Clara O’Connor

The Once and Future Queen #1

Release date: 21st Jan 2021

This seems like a really interesting alternate history fantasy. Set in a Roman version of London with references to Celtic lore. It hints at magic, mystery and a love triangle too all of which seem like they could be very fun reading.

A Pinch Of Magic
Michelle Harrison

A pinch of Magic #1

Middle Grade Marvels

I have see this book almost everywhere but I have to admit I know very little about it. But Middle Grade Marvels is yet to steer me wrong when it comes to choosing the group read for the month and we always have such fun discussions that I am looking forward to starting this one and seeing what it is all about. the cover looks such fun.

The Murder of Roger Ackryd
Agatha Christie

Hercule Poirot #4

The Write Reads Gang

This is a re-read for me but I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to re-read one of my favourite Hercule Poirot mysteries. I adore this book and I can’t wait to discuss it with the group, hear all there thoughts and theories. Its going to be a lot of fun.

A Study in Scarlet
Arthur Conan Doyle

Sherlock Holmes #1

As I said in my Goals post I am going to attempt to conquer a classic each month. I decided to start off small with the short novel of a study in scarlet the first in the Sherlock holmes series. While I know the story well I have never actually read the book and thought it was about time that I did.

I have decided to take part in the Among Us Readathon this month to, I have managed to fit most of these books into the prompts and added a few others so tomorrow I will be posting my full TBR and what prompts all these fit into.

Is there a particular book you are looking forward to reading this month?

I would love to chat all things bookish with you! You can comment down below or find me on Twitter or Goodreads!

Happy Reading!

  1. Ooh I love TBR games on booktube! Love your game! I decided to play Becca’s Bookopoly this year, but adjusted the squares a bit more to my reading taste!
I’m also planning on reading A Memory Called Empire this month since I got the ARC of the sequel haha!

  2. Hallo, Hallo Fi or do you prefer Fiona?

I’m a new follower of yours – when I saw this post being featured on Twitter, I really took stock of it because I’ve been *struggling!* for so many years now to cut down and abolish my book blogger backlogue of reviews! I know what originally left me treading water and how I inadvertently kept falling behind on them *but!* a girl just wants to read, review and see some positive progress! Which I know you can relate too!!

I saw this right when it went live and I thought *dice!?* how did I not think of that?!

I took to this like a duck to water – I found coloured numbered dice last night (in 3x colours) but I’m using the numbers moreso than the colours except to offset which dice roll for Fiction & Non-Fiction and then, I devised this system of rolls based on what kind of dice I throw and how that equates to a prompt to find a book off my backlogue! I was up late into the night sorting this out and having a wild time seeing which books came ‘forward’ through the dice as it felt interesting to me that many of the stories I was *thinking!* of reading are actually going to be reads this January according to how I rolled the dice and how it all tabulated together!

I am going to release my notes and system about this at the end of January as I want to see how this goes the first month but bless you for writing this post! I’m so happy and I’m hopeful by month’s end I have some positive news to share how this new system of selecting backlogue reads worked out for me!! I still have a few kinks to work out but overall its really addictive fun!
