Tag Tuesday – Character of the Year 2020 Tag

I was tagged by the awesome Ashlee ( Books Are 42) and it seems like such a fun tag and different from the other best books of the year type tags. Tracing back the Creator of this tag, I believe it was Amanda, A Brighter Shade of Hope, However it seems she is no longer active. Ashlee has credited where she found this tag as  Zezee With Books.

I rarely post about specific characters but they really do make or break a book sometime so I think it is a really fun way to celebrate some characters. Though I am sure there will be some familiar books cropping up aswell.

Questions

Favourite Male Character of The Year

Fetch Philips
Fetch Phillips Files
Luke Arnold

The Last Smile in Sunder City Review
Dead Man in a Ditch Review

He may not see like the likely choice, filled with self loathing and hatred for his own species, a true noir style gumshoe PI but I really enjoyed the growth arc that he under went through out the two books that were released last year. I really felt for him as the story went on, he really hasn’t had the best time of it, and he really became one of my favourite characters of the year

Favourite Female Character of The Year

Cara
The Space between Worlds
Michaiah Johnson

My Review

Again not the most likely of choice but in my opinion one of the best written characters of the year, We follow Cara’s monologue throughout the book so get a very keen sense of her thoughts and feelings, the emotional states she traverses through as she navigates through a multiverse. Its just such a character rich story that you can’t help but get invested in Cara, her life and her relationships.

Most Relatable Character of The Year

Murderbot
Murderbot Diaries
Martha Wells

All Systems Red Review
Artificial Condition Review
Rogue Protocol Review

Again I am all about the weird choices for this one I have picked an AI as my most relatable character for the sole reason is I totally understand him. Murderbot (his choosen name) wants nothing more than a peaceful life, to read books and watch his TV shows and not have to interact. He is the ultimate introvert that finds himself dragged into interactions but ends up appreciating them in the end and really I just relate to that!

Couple of The Year

Tessa/Will/Jem Love triangle
The Infernal Devices
Cassandra Clare

The Clockwork Angel Review
The Clockwork Prince Review

Yes my favourite couple is a love triangle. I haven’t finished this series so I am not sure how this one resolves just yet but I have to admit I got swept up in the Shadowhunters series in 2020 and I have been enjoying buddy reading them with Ellie and all the random messages we sent back and forth to each other. The back on forth on these relationships was great fun to chat about and that’s why they are my couple of the year.

Villain of The Year

The Thing in the Tree / The Racist Neighbour
The Ghost Tree
Christina Henry

My Review

I think this is just going to be a whole list of weird choices as I went for something that doesn’t really have a name. It is just the thing that lurks in the ghost tree during the events of The Ghost Tree. This was both spooky and creepy in the best possible way. The racist neighbour is another choice as she was just vile, whipping up unfounded hate and mistrust in the neighbourhood that was to scarily close to events today despite the book being set in the 80s.

Most Disliked Character of The Year

Regal
The Farseer Trilogy
Robin Hobb

Assassin’s Apprentice Review
Royal Assassin – review to come soon

I am still working my way through this trilogy but damn do I love to hate Regal! He is just such a dick. It is the only work for him and I really do love hating everything he does. He is just such a good wanna be villain. He has a great slimy quality to him, constantly had plans and schemes on the go while also seeming completely nonchalant. I love when Fitz gets one over on him.

Royal of The Year

Sarene
Elantris
Brandon Sanderson

My Review

You can’t get more kick ass than Sarene. Her fiancรฉ dies as she is traveling to meet him effectively trapping her in a marriage contract, married to a dead man she never met and in a completely new country. She doesn’t moan or reside herself to an isolated life instead she gets shit done. She works her way into important meetings, investigates the unusual plague in the city, challenges religious zealots and joins a plot to over through the current government! I like her.

Sidekick/Non-Main Character of The Year

Markham
Chronicles of St Mary’s
Jodi Taylor

Too many to post all my reviews so here is my review for book 8

Omg! I love Markham. He is the comic relief character that comes through when you need him too, keeps it light hearted when its needed and has the sage and wise advice when you least expect him too. He really takes off on his own in the short stories a couple of which are from his perspective and they are hilarious. I am scared what Taylor might do as she doesn’t give him an easy time of it and I don’t want him to leave this series. I am Intending on doing a full series re-read and review in my Thoughts while re-reading series so I should have a page linking all my reviews up soon.

Siblings of The Year

ย Rob and Charley Sutherland
The Unlikely Escape of Uriah Heep
H.G. Parry

My Review

One of my favourite books so last year I couldn’t let this pass by without mentioning it in this post, and of course as it focuses primarily on the relationship between Rob and exceptional little brother Charley they were just perfect for this category. This is just such a wonderful book, mixing both the magical with the exploration of the sibling relationship and there isn’t enough books that really dive into that.

  1. You know what? I’m so glad that Murderbot is your most relatable character. I’m also super glad that I didn’t choose Murderbot as mine, because I seriously considered it for a while. xD They’re so totally relatable, though, right? Who knew? Also, Markham is a darn gift and deserves his own series, because heck if he’s anyone’s sidekick lol.
