Friday 5 – YA Mysteries/Thrillers

I can’t find who started the Friday Five book blog meme. It seems to crop up in many different style such as “Five for Friday”, “Five on Friday” , “FridayFive Challenge”. I also can’t find a topic list like you would have for the Six on Sunday meme. Therefore I am just doing my own thing and setting my own topics just so I can chat books with you.

Today’s topic is

Five YA Mysteries/Thrillers I love

After recently reading What Beauty There is as part of The Write Reads Ultimate Blog tour I was inspired to look back at previous YA Mysteries and thrillers That I have enjoyed.

The Cousins
Karen M McManus

Rating: 5 out of 5.

My Review

Another Write Reads Ultimate Blog tour that I was really excited to be a part of back in December. I adore McManus’s writing and have enjoyed all of her books so far. She has such a good way of building up the tension. There were so many twists and turns and I loved the way it all played out

The Inheritance Games
Jennifer Lynn Barnes

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

My Review

Yes another The Write Reads Ultimate Blog Tour and and another big hit in my book. This was such and fun read. I love a good manor house mystery chocked full of family drama and this has it all. The only thing that let me down was the very end but with the sequel coming out this year I am excited to read more.

The Furies
Katie Lowe

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

My Review

This one was kinda spooky and so much fun, set in the late 90s it really had some strong nostalgia for me, it really reflect my teenage years in early 00’s UK. It had little elements of the paranormal without being an urban fantasy. It was dark, with an unreliable narrator which really made it a page turner.

Truly Devious
Maureen Johnson

Rating: 5 out of 5.

My Review

This whole series should go on the list. It is genuinely a fantastic mix of cosy mystery, boarding school mystery with little thriller elements. It is clear Maureen Johnson if a big mystery fan with lots of nods to other crime writers.

The Truth About Keeping Secrets
Savannah Brown

Rating: 4 out of 5.

My Review

I read this one a long time ago but it really stuck with me. It had such an excellent way of discussing grief and weaving that in with mystery. It had a really raw and powerful way of discussing the emotions and it was a really good high-school thriller.

  1. I read Truly Devious and did enjoy it, but I had so many questions by the time I had finished! I just got The Vanishing Stair so I’ll have to read that one next to see how the series goes 🙂
