From Goodreads:
From acclaimed comics writer Alex de Campi, a sexy (prose) novel about an agency that specialises in breaking up relationships, with a side hustle in the occult.
Evie Cross had big dreams of becoming an investigative journalist but at 25 and struggling to make it in New York City, she’s finally starting to admit that her dream is her side hustle and her day job is actually… her job. That is, until she signs on as a temp for a small consultancy whose principal, Misha Meserov, specializes in breaking up relationships. Misha is tall, infuriatingly handsome, and effortlessly charismatic—he can make almost anyone, man or woman, fall into bed with him. And he often does.
But the more Evie is exposed to Misha’s scandalous world, the more she becomes convinced that he’s hiding something… when a wealthy San Francisco tech CEO with a dissolving marriage starts delving into the occult and turns up dead, Evie has to decide between her journalistic desire for the truth and her growing desire for Misha.
My Thoughts
I LOVED THIS BOOK! I honestly couldn’t put it down. There is just something so fun about it. It has a very "Girl making it in the Big City" TV dramady vibe to it at the start that morphs effortlessly into a steamy paranormal mystery/romance plot. It is filled with so many gasp out loud moments, that just when you think it will be safe to put it down and go to bed it throws you another can’t stop now moment.
The main character, Evie, is great. She is determined and headstrong at all the right moments, sticking to her guns and taking no shit, but when she gets home, is with friends, is alone she allows herself to be venerable, confused and afraid. She makes mistakes and learns from them, pulls others up on there mistakes and she also isn’t afraid to try and fail. Misha is your standard RomCom hunk, dark and brooding, devil with a heart of gold and despite fulfilling all these tropes he is so much fun.
The first half of the book is entertaining, navigating the cutthroat corporate world, the mysterious boss, making friends and learning the ropes in the unusual investigative arm of a high powered New York law firm, which specialise in ending the unwanted relationships of the rich and powerful clients of said law firm. This is fast paced, interesting and fun, we learn alot about Evie, her friends and colleagues. Then the paranormal adventure kicks in and the books take a turn and it gets even better. It becomes a mad and crazy event filled dash that I just couldn’t stop reading. Also loved that the paranormal aspects were not Vampires.
Honestly if you are looking for a book that will make you laugh, make you excited to keep reading, make you grin like a maniac which had kick ass female lead, a steamy romance and some out of the box paranormal elements this is the book for you. Its just so much fun!
In other words – READ THIS BOOK
